Plenty of change is in progress or on the way for San Ysidro, thanks in part to major development plans at the border and the ongoing work of community groups down south.
Casa Familiar is one such organization. David Flores, the nonprofit's community development and design officer, has been focusing heavily on boosting affordable housing in the community, as well as the effort to build a sidewalk that would allow San Ysidro students to get to school safely. That latter effort is finally coming to fruition. But for the timebeing, students are still forced to walk a narrow path between a dangerous canyon and high-speed traffic. Flores told us, "I'm just glad nothing has happened."
VOSD Radio co-hosts Caty Green and Andy Keatts talk with Flores about the design challenges of community-minded housing, and the biggest challenges facing San Ysidro.
